Is your CVT failing, or just its software?
P0776 and P17F0 both point at a CVT, but the fix is often a reprogram rather than a rebuild. Here is what each code tests and what is already on file for it.
P0776 reads as "pressure control solenoid B — performance or stuck off," one of the pressure-solenoid codes that turns up when a continuously variable transmission is not getting the line pressure it asked for. P17F0 is a narrower relative: a manufacturer code for CVT judder, the low-speed shudder some drivers feel through the pedal rather than a clunk. Neither one means the transmission is finished, and both have already been the subject of reprogramming campaigns large enough to be worth ruling out before anyone talks about a rebuild.
What the pressure-solenoid code is testing
A CVT does not shift gears the way a stepped automatic does — it runs a steel belt or chain between two variable-diameter pulleys, and pressure solenoids are what widen or narrow those pulleys on command. P0776 sets when the transmission control module commands a pressure change through solenoid B and the pressure read back from a sensor in the valve body does not move the way it should, or does not move at all.
That test can fail for a mechanical reason — a solenoid clogged with worn clutch material, a valve body passage restricted by degraded fluid, a wiring fault at the connector. It can also fail because the control logic itself is calibrated too tightly, commanding a pressure the hardware was never going to hit cleanly, or reading a sensor whose signal is fine but whose timing is not what the software expects. The code cannot tell those two apart. That is exactly the gap a software update is built to close.
Judder is a different complaint
P17F0 is not a pressure-solenoid fault. It is a diagnostic for the vibration some CVTs produce at low speed under light throttle, which drivers describe as a judder rather than a shift shock. The transmission control module watches for the belt losing steady contact with the pulleys and logs the pattern it sees. Where the diagnosis lands often comes down to how the software interprets that pattern, which is why the bulletins covering it treat it as a reprogramming issue first, ahead of any belt or pulley work.
What the manufacturers' bulletins say
Nissan has published roughly 50 bulletin communications on P0776, including a CVT reprogramming campaign covering close to 1.66 million vehicles. A separate set of about 60 communications addresses CVT judder specifically, describing revised transmission-control diagnostic logic together with a reprogram and a warranty extension for the affected transmissions. Between the two, a meaningful share of both complaints have already been treated as something the existing hardware can be talked into behaving correctly, not something that needs replacing.
Bulletins are revised or superseded as manufacturers learn more; verify the current version for your vehicle through NHTSA's public database or your dealer.
What else shows up alongside it
Those are companion codes, not confirmation of one failure. P0776 sits inside a wider pressure-control system that shares a valve body and a fluid pump, and a scan that catches one solenoid struggling often catches its neighbours too. P0700 is the general transmission-control-system flag other faults ride under, P0740 covers the torque converter clutch, and P0745 is solenoid A's version of this same fault. Seeing any of them alongside P0776 points at the valve body as a whole rather than one solenoid.
Before you approve any transmission work
Ask for the transmission control module's software version and whether a reprogram applies to your VIN before agreeing to a valve body or transmission replacement — that lookup costs nothing, and a current reprogram supersedes work a shop might otherwise plan around. Check the CVT fluid condition and level next; fluid that is dark, burnt-smelling or low will produce exactly this kind of pressure complaint on hardware that is otherwise sound. Only once both of those come back clean does a mechanical diagnosis of the valve body or solenoid make sense.
Is it safe to drive?
A steady check-engine light with either code is not an immediate breakdown risk, but a CVT struggling to hold pressure can slip or hesitate under load, so avoid towing or hard acceleration in your car until it has been looked at. Judder on its own will not strand you; it is uncomfortable rather than dangerous. Either way, the software check comes first. It is the fastest thing to rule out, and on these two codes, the manufacturer has already done a lot of the work for you.
