Before you book the garage, check the gas cap
A large EVAP leak code has one cause so common it is almost a cliche. Here is how the test works, why the cap matters, and how to tell a cap from a real leak.
P0455 reads as "evaporative emission system leak detected — gross leak". It sounds serious and expensive. Often it is neither. It is one of the few check-engine codes with a genuine chance of being fixed in ten seconds in a car park.
It is not a headline number like a misfire. It is, however, a code people pay to have diagnosed far more often than they need to.
What the system is doing
Petrol evaporates. Modern cars are not allowed to let those vapours reach the air, so the fuel tank is part of a sealed loop — the EVAP system. Vapour collects in a charcoal canister, and when conditions are right the engine draws it in and burns it.
Because the loop has to be sealed, the car tests the seal on its own. Depending on the make it either pulls a light vacuum on the system and watches whether the pressure holds, or pushes a small amount of pressure in and watches for it to drop. If the seal leaks badly enough that the test cannot build pressure at all, you get P0455.
The test runs on its own schedule, usually on a cold start with the tank between roughly a quarter and three quarters full. That timing matters later.
Why the cap is the first suspect
The fuel cap is the only part of that sealed loop a human opens and closes several times a month. It is a rubber seal with a ratchet, and it is the cheapest thing in the system.
Three things go wrong with it:
- It was not clicked home at the last fill. One turn short is enough.
- The rubber seal has hardened with age and no longer sits flat.
- The cap is an aftermarket part that does not seal properly on this filler neck.
There is also a fourth, less obvious one: filling the tank with the engine running, or topping up past the pump's first click, can confuse the test and set the code even when everything is intact.
What the manufacturers' bulletins say
Some manufacturers have published service bulletins for gross EVAP-leak codes that point to a PCM software update rather than a part. Bulletins in the Dodge and Chrysler lineup describe this for certain engines: a reflash that corrects how the leak-detection test interprets its own readings, which can set P0455 even when the fuel system seals properly.
That is a second thing worth ruling out alongside the cap. If the cheap test above does not clear the code for good, ask your shop whether a PCM update applies to your vehicle before booking a smoke test. It costs nothing to check, and it is the kind of fix that is easy to miss if you go straight to hunting for a leak. Service bulletin information is summarized from public NHTSA records; bulletins may be revised or superseded — verify the current version for your vehicle through NHTSA's public database or your dealer.
Telling a cap from a real leak
If the cap is the problem, the fix is the cap. If it is not, the leak is somewhere else in the loop — a cracked vent hose, a purge valve stuck open, a failed vent solenoid, or a rusted seam on the tank itself.
The cheap test first. Take the cap off, look at the rubber seal for cracks, flat spots or grit, wipe the filler neck clean, and put the cap back on until it clicks two or three times. Clear the code and drive normally for a few days, including at least a few cold starts. The EVAP monitor needs those cold starts to run again. If the code stays away, that was it.
If it comes back, it is a real leak, and a smoke test at a garage will find it far faster than guesswork. A workshop pumps harmless vapour into the system and watches for where it escapes.
The related codes are the useful signal
P0455 is the large-leak code. Its siblings tell you how big the hole is: P0442 is a small leak, P0456 is a very small one, and P0441 means the purge flow is wrong rather than the seal.

Which is a useful hint that when the EVAP system fails it often fails in more than one place, and that a stuck purge valve can present as a leak.
One more thing worth knowing: a small EVAP leak can clear itself. P0442 will go away on its own after enough clean drive cycles if the fault has genuinely gone — which is exactly what happens after you reseat a cap. The light does not need a scan tool to switch off. It needs the monitor to run and pass.
Is it safe to drive?
Yes. An EVAP leak does not affect how the engine runs, and it will not leave you stranded. It will fail an emissions test, and it does put fuel vapour into the air, so it is worth fixing — just not worth panicking about. Check the cap first.
