Throttle Actuator A Control System - Idle Position Not Learned
What it means
P2176 means the ECM has not stored a valid closed-throttle (idle) position for the electronic throttle. It commonly appears after a battery disconnect, ECM reset, or throttle-body cleaning or replacement when the required idle relearn was not performed. Until the ECM learns the idle stop, the engine may idle high, rough, or stall, though driving power is usually unaffected.
Can I keep driving? Usually drivable — the engine may idle high, rough, or hunt until the idle relearn is done, but power is generally normal.

Figures reflect only diagnostic scans recorded through our own apps and tools. Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- High, low, or hunting idle
- Possible stalling at idle or when coming to a stop
- Slight hesitation off idle
Common causes
Most likely first
- Idle/throttle relearn never completed after a battery disconnect, ECM reset, or throttle-body service — the most common causeLikely
- Dirty or carbon-filled throttle bore preventing the ECM from learning a stable idle positionCommon
- Faulty throttle actuator (throttle motor) or throttle valveCommon
- Poor connection or wiring fault in the throttle control circuitLess often
- PCM/ECM fault (least likely)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Clean the throttle body and plate so the throttle can seat at a consistent closed position.
- Perform the manufacturer's idle/throttle relearn procedure — this alone often clears the code.
- Scan for other throttle codes that could be blocking the relearn.
- Inspect the throttle connector and wiring for corrosion or loose pins.
- Test the throttle actuator motor if the idle position still will not learn, then clear and re-test.
