P2470

Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Bank 1 Sensor 4

Exhaust temperature / emissions Generic OBD-II Medium

What it means

P2470 means the ECM detected low voltage (a short-to-ground or open) in the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor circuit for bank 1, sensor 4. This sensor reports exhaust temperature so the ECM can protect the turbo, catalyst, and diesel particulate filter. A low-circuit fault gives an unreliable reading, which can limit performance or regeneration while the engine keeps running.

Medium

Can I keep driving? Usually drivable, but the ECM may limit power or diesel-filter regeneration to protect the exhaust — have it checked soon.

Figures reflect only diagnostic scans recorded through our own apps and tools. Cars are typically scanned because a symptom or warning light prompted it, so these counts describe our scan records — not the incidence of faults in any model, and not the quality, reliability, or safety of any vehicle. Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Short-to-ground or open in the EGT sensor circuit
  2. Faulty exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor
  3. Corroded or loose connector at the sensor
  4. Heat- or chafe-damaged wiring near the exhaust
  5. Rarely, an ECM fault

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Scan for codes and record freeze-frame data.
  2. Inspect the EGT sensor connector and wiring for a short-to-ground or open.
  3. Measure the sensor signal voltage and compare against specification.
  4. Check continuity of the signal and ground wires back to the ECM.
  5. Replace the EGT sensor if it is out of spec, then clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P2470?+
Usually yes short-term, but the ECM may cut power or skip diesel-filter regeneration, so repair it before soot builds up.
Can I just clear P2470?+
It will return until the low-circuit fault or sensor is repaired.
