A Camshaft Profile Actuator A Control Performance/Stuck Off Bank 1

Cam profile / valve lift control Generic OBD-II High

What it means

P003C means the camshaft profile control actuator on bank 1 is stuck off — it isn't switching to the high-lift cam profile when the ECM commands it. Because the system is oil-pressure actuated, low or dirty oil and a clogged control valve are common causes. The engine normally still starts and drives, but it loses top-end power and can run roughly.

High

Can I keep driving? Usually driveable, but the cam profile is stuck in its low-lift state, so expect reduced high-rpm power; get it checked before longer trips.

Common symptoms

What you'll notice

Common causes

Most likely first

  1. Camshaft profile actuator mechanically stuck off on bank 1
  2. Restricted oil flow from low or dirty oil / clogged oil control valve
  3. Failed profile control solenoid
  4. Wiring or connector fault in the actuator circuit
  5. Failed ECM (least likely)

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and check engine oil level and condition — the profile system is oil-actuated.
  2. Inspect and clean the oil control valve and its screen; low or sludged oil often prevents the actuator from moving.
  3. Test the solenoid resistance and its wiring/connector for faults.
  4. Replace the actuator or solenoid if it stays stuck; consider the ECM only last. Clear and re-test.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is it safe to drive with P003C?+
Short-term yes, but the engine won't reach full power and may run rough, so avoid hard driving until it's repaired.
Can I just clear P003C?+
It returns when the ECM commands the profile change and the actuator doesn't respond; fix the oil supply or actuator first.
