What it means

P2096 means the ECM's fuel-trim correction based on the downstream (post-catalyst) oxygen sensor on bank 1 is reading too lean — the exhaust after the catalytic converter shows more oxygen than expected. The most common real-world cause is a small exhaust leak near the rear O2 sensor that lets air in, though a genuine lean running condition can also set it. The car usually drives normally, but it needs diagnosis to pass emissions.

  3. Check for intake vacuum leaks and confirm fuel pressure is within spec.
  4. Test the downstream (bank 1) O2 sensor's response; replace if lazy or contaminated.
  5. On vehicles with variable valve timing, verify cam timing per the service manual, then clear and re-test.

Is it safe to drive with P2096?+
For short trips, yes. The engine still runs, but the ECM is reporting a lean mixture after the catalyst. If it's an exhaust or vacuum leak the underlying problem can grow, and you'll fail an emissions test until it's fixed.

It will return once the fuel-trim monitor runs again if the lean condition is still there. Finding the exhaust leak, vacuum leak, or fuel issue is what actually clears it.
