What it means

P2097 means that, based on the downstream (post-catalyst) oxygen sensor on bank 1, the ECM sees the fuel mixture running too rich — more fuel than needed. The car usually still drives, but rich running wastes fuel and can overheat the catalytic converter. Common causes are over-fueling (a leaking injector or high fuel pressure) or a sensor giving the ECM a skewed reading.

  3. Test the upstream air-fuel/O2 sensor response and the downstream sensor for contamination.
  4. Check the MAF/MAP readings and the EVAP purge valve for a stuck-open condition.
  5. Repair the confirmed cause (injector, pressure, or sensor), clear the code, and re-run the drive cycle.
