Lost Communication With Emissions Critical Control Information
What it means
U0113 means a module has lost the emissions-critical data it needs from another controller over the network. Without this information the emissions and self-monitoring systems can't work correctly, so the check-engine light comes on and monitors won't complete. The engine usually still runs, though some vehicles limit power until communication is restored.
Can I keep driving? Usually driveable, but the emissions and monitoring systems may be impaired and the car can fail an emissions test; some vehicles enter a reduced-power mode.
Real-world scan data
Figures reflect only diagnostic scans recorded through our own apps and tools. Cars are typically scanned because a symptom or warning light prompted it, so these counts describe our scan records — not the incidence of faults in any model, and not the quality, reliability, or safety of any vehicle. Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Emissions monitors won't complete (stay not ready)
- Vehicle fails or can't be tested for emissions
- Possible reduced engine power on some vehicles
Common causes
Most likely first
- CAN bus wiring or connector fault between the affected modulesLikely
- A control module (often the ECM/PCM) offline or failingCommon
- Corroded or loose module connectorCommon
- Loss of power or ground to a controller on the busLess often
- Software or programming mismatch after a repairLess often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Scan all modules and see which controller isn't reporting.
- Inspect the CAN wiring and connectors between the involved modules.
- Verify power and ground to the suspect module.
- Repair any related bus codes first, since they often cause this one.
- Confirm module software is current and reprogram if needed. Clear and re-run the monitors.
