What it means

P2502 is a general charging-system voltage fault: the ECM has detected system voltage outside the expected range while the engine is running. It usually points to the alternator, its drive belt, the battery, or the cabling between them. Because a failing charging system can eventually leave the car running on the battery alone, it's worth diagnosing promptly to avoid being stranded.

How to diagnose & fix

Work through it in order

  1. Read freeze-frame data and note the recorded system voltage.
  2. Check the battery state of charge and clean/tighten the battery and ground connections.
  3. Inspect the alternator belt for tension and condition.
  4. With the engine running, measure charging voltage at the battery — roughly 13.5–14.7 V is normal; low or high points to the alternator/regulator.
  5. Test the alternator output and the wiring between alternator, battery, and ECM; replace the failed component and re-test.
