What it means
P0049 means the ECM has calculated that the turbocharger (or supercharger) turbine is spinning faster than its safe limit — an overspeed/overboost condition. It usually stems from a stuck or leaking wastegate or boost control that lets boost climb too high. This is one to take seriously: sustained overspeed can wreck the turbo and damage the engine, so limit driving until it's diagnosed.
Can I keep driving? Not recommended — an overspeeding turbo can damage itself and the engine; drive as little as possible and avoid hard acceleration until it's fixed.
