Diesel Intake Air Flow A Position Sensor Circuit Low
What it means
P02E8 means the ECM sees a lower-than-expected voltage from the position sensor on a diesel's intake air-flow control (the intake throttle or swirl actuator). Because the computer can no longer trust how far that valve is open, it often limits power or enters limp mode. It is an electrical circuit fault — usually the sensor, its wiring, or the connector.
Can I keep driving? Often driveable but expect reduced power or limp mode — the ECM may cap performance until the intake air-flow position is read correctly.

Figures reflect only diagnostic scans recorded through our own apps and tools. Cars are typically scanned because a symptom or warning light prompted it, so these counts describe our scan records — not the incidence of faults in any model, and not the quality, reliability, or safety of any vehicle. Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced power or limp / fail-safe mode
- Rough or uneven running, hesitation
- Possible hard starting or black smoke on a diesel
Common causes
Most likely first
- Faulty intake air-flow (throttle/swirl actuator) position sensorLikely
- Signal wire shorted to ground or open in the sensor circuitCommon
- Loose or corroded connector at the sensor or actuatorCommon
- Carbon-fouled or sticking intake air-flow control valveLess often
- ECM fault (rare — rule out wiring first)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Scan and read freeze-frame data to confirm the fault is on the intake air-flow position sensor, not the MAF.
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for a short to ground, chafing, or corrosion.
- Back-probe the sensor signal and compare its voltage against the actuator position (spec varies by make).
- Check the intake air-flow / swirl valve for carbon build-up or a sticking linkage.
- Replace the position sensor if it reads out of range with good wiring; consider the ECM only as a last resort. Clear and re-test.
