Intake Air Temperature/Ambient Air Temperature Correlation
What it means
P009A means the intake air temperature reading and the outside (ambient) air temperature reading disagree by more than the ECM allows. After the car has sat and cooled, these two readings should be close, so a mismatch usually points to a faulty air-temperature sensor or its wiring. The engine still starts and runs normally; the main effect is the check-engine light and slightly less accurate fueling.
Can I keep driving? Safe to drive in most cases — the fault mildly affects fueling accuracy, not whether the car starts or runs.

Figures reflect only diagnostic scans recorded through our own apps and tools. Cars are typically scanned because a symptom or warning light prompted it, so these counts describe our scan records — not the incidence of faults in any model, and not the quality, reliability, or safety of any vehicle. Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Slightly off fueling or economy when cold
- Little or no noticeable change in how the engine runs
Common causes
Most likely first
- Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensorLikely
- Faulty ambient (outside) air temperature sensorCommon
- Wiring or connector fault on either sensor circuitCommon
- IAT sensor built into the MAF — a faulty MAF assemblyLess often
- Failed ECM (least likely)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame data and compare the intake air and ambient air readings after a cold soak — they should be close.
- Inspect both sensors' connectors and wiring for damage or corrosion.
- Test each sensor's resistance/response against a known temperature; replace the inaccurate one.
- If the IAT is part of the MAF assembly, replace the MAF. Consider the ECM only last. Clear and re-test.
