Water in Fuel Sensor A Circuit
What it means
P2264 sets when the engine computer sees an electrical fault in the water-in-fuel sensor circuit, usually a sensor in a diesel fuel filter or water separator. The engine typically still runs normally, but the system that warns you of water in the fuel is not reporting correctly, which is worth fixing before water reaches the injection system.
Can I keep driving? Usually drivable, but the sensor that warns of water in the fuel is offline — get it checked before water can reach and damage injection parts.

Figures reflect only diagnostic scans recorded through our own apps and tools. Cars are typically scanned because a symptom or warning light prompted it, so these counts describe our scan records — not the incidence of faults in any model, and not the quality, reliability, or safety of any vehicle. Common symptoms
What you'll notice
- Check-engine light on
- Water-in-fuel warning light may stay on or fail to work
- Often no noticeable change in how the vehicle drives
Common causes
Most likely first
- Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at the water-in-fuel sensorLikely
- Open or shorted wiring between the sensor and the moduleCommon
- Failed water-in-fuel sensor (commonly in the fuel filter housing)Common
- Actual water accumulation in the fuel filter/separatorLess often
- Failed PCM/ECM (rare)Less often
How to diagnose & fix
Work through it in order
- Read freeze-frame data, then inspect the sensor connector at the fuel filter/water separator for corrosion or moisture.
- Check the wiring and ground for opens, shorts, and chafing back to the module.
- Drain the fuel filter/water separator if a drain is fitted.
- Compare the sensor's signal to spec; replace the sensor if it is out of range.
- Clear the code and re-test; suspect the module only after wiring and sensor check out.
